Cost comparison

Cost of retirement homes in India for NRIs

Retirement-home cost in India changes by city, care level, room type, food, medical support, and whether you rent, lease, deposit, or buy. Use this page to compare total monthly outflow and capital lock-in before asking providers for quotes.

Active senior living

Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 60,000+ monthly service planning band. Compare maintenance, meals, housekeeping, activities, emergency response, utilities, and purchase or lease terms separately.

Assisted living or care home

Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 1.5 lakh+ monthly planning band. Care level, nursing support, mobility help, medication support, room type, and city usually move the final quote.

Premium retirement community

Capital lock-in can matter more than monthly fee. Check deposit, purchase price, refund rules, annual escalation, resale rules, and whether care upgrades exist on campus.

I ran across Desi Return at a time when I needed it the most. The content published by DR has been a great help before our move back to India. The community created via whatsapp has been diligently maintained to ensure it composes people who are genuine motive to return to India or those who returned. They offer valuable advice, participate in debates respectfully and exchanging ideas. I hope to see DR continue to keep the quality and value offering high. Best wishes!

Good experience - finally a whatsapp group where people are actually engaged & you get help. Highly recommended - returning is overwhelming but you not alone - if india has anything, it has lots of nris 😜

I think improvement can be made if fewer people are in a group (eg. Have more fin groups). I rather not have to 'check 400msgs in a wk' but some people are very helpful.

Desi Return replied

Thank you Kush! Hard to keep up with the messages in the groups with active engagement

Have watched your Youtube videos and am very happy to see a very diverse group of people who share their experiences. While most of the videos address the moves back to India by younger folks with school aged kids, it was helpful to see some recent videos of seniors discussing senior living communities in India. Keep up the good work!

FAQ

Questions people ask

Senior living in India is increasingly a proactive lifestyle choice rather than a last resort — many residents move in while still fully active and independent, drawn to the built-in social calendar, security, and hassle-free daily living rather than out of necessity.
Monthly costs typically range from Rs 15,000 for budget options to Rs 2 lakh for luxury communities, usually including food, housekeeping, and basic healthcare access; ownership-model properties range from roughly Rs 25 lakh to Rs 3 crore, while rental/lease models need lower upfront investment but higher recurring fees.
Returnees increasingly choose active senior-living communities for built-in social life, on-site healthcare access, and reduced dependence on family caregiving — a shift especially common among NRIs from the US/Canada who are used to community-style retirement living.
Planning ahead means setting up a local emergency contact/caregiver network, pre-vetting hospitals near your parents, and considering assisted-living or senior-living options before a health crisis forces a rushed decision. Desi Return's senior-living service connects families to vetted options in advance.
Distance makes you reactive unless you build structure before a crisis. Families that cope well usually assign a daily touchpoint (sibling, neighbor, or paid helper), a named medical advocate in the parents' city, documented meds and doctors, and a pre-agreed escalation path (when to fly back, when to move to assisted care). CCTV alone cannot open the door when an ambulance is needed.
You can enroll after landing, but the gap bites if you need care in month one. Indian policies typically impose 2-4 year waiting periods on pre-existing conditions and quote higher premiums as you age. Foreign employer plans often cover little or nothing for India treatment once you are living here—not just visiting. If return is within 12 months, start enrollment while still abroad so coverage can begin near arrival.
After 30+ years abroad, prioritize health, social circle, property, children still abroad, US citizenship and tax, medical access, and whether India will be full-time or seasonal—not nostalgia alone.
Independent senior living suits active seniors who want community and services. Assisted living adds help with daily routines. Nursing or home-health care covers higher medical needs. Shortlist by care level first, then location, monthly cost, medical tie-ups, and whether your parent can age in place with upgrades later.
For a single retiree, the real design is routine and social infrastructure: community, healthcare, hobbies, volunteering, travel, domestic help, emergency contacts, and financial administration. Senior living may solve loneliness and emergency response better than a standalone apartment, even when money is not the constraint.
Pros can be family proximity, lower help-at-home costs, cultural comfort, and easier domestic travel. Cons can be pollution, traffic, bureaucracy, health-system navigation, property friction, and children's lives remaining abroad. Retirement is a city/care/community choice—not just 'India versus US.'
Yes, but quality varies widely. India has senior living communities, assisted living, home care, nursing support, and old-age homes—visit in person, check medical tie-ups, and talk to current residents before you commit.
If Aadhaar, mobile, biometric, PPO, and pension account mapping are ready, generate Jeevan Pramaan and verify PDA acceptance. If abroad, use the conventional certificate route through an Indian mission or authorised bank officer.
Define role scope, complete identity and reference checks, agree payment and leave rules, set access boundaries, and keep backup coverage for school, health, and emergencies.
