I ran across Desi Return at a time when I needed it the most. The content published by DR has been a great help before our move back to India. The community created via whatsapp has been diligently maintained to ensure it composes people who are genuine motive to return to India or those who returned. They offer valuable advice, participate in debates respectfully and exchanging ideas. I hope to see DR continue to keep the quality and value offering high. Best wishes!

Good experience - finally a whatsapp group where people are actually engaged & you get help. Highly recommended - returning is overwhelming but you not alone - if india has anything, it has lots of nris 😜

I think improvement can be made if fewer people are in a group (eg. Have more fin groups). I rather not have to 'check 400msgs in a wk' but some people are very helpful.

Desi Return replied

Thank you Kush! Hard to keep up with the messages in the groups with active engagement

Have watched your Youtube videos and am very happy to see a very diverse group of people who share their experiences. While most of the videos address the moves back to India by younger folks with school aged kids, it was helpful to see some recent videos of seniors discussing senior living communities in India. Keep up the good work!

Avinash Peddi, founder of Desi Return
The founder

Built by someone who lived it — 20 years in the US, moved back to India.

Avinash went through the full weight of it — uprooting kids, unwinding finances, navigating two tax systems, and rebuilding life from scratch. Not just the logistics, but the identity shift, the guilt, the uncertainty.

Since returning, he has spoken with hundreds of families across the US, UK, and Canada. The pattern was always the same: fragmented information, scattered advice, and the emotional complexity of the move almost never acknowledged. Desi Return exists to fix that.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Yes — spending 1-2 months in your target city living as a resident (renting a flat, doing daily errands, commuting) rather than staying with family as a guest gives a far more accurate preview of daily life than a vacation-style visit, and is one of the most consistently recommended steps by families who've already returned.
The ideal window balances the Indian academic year (so kids don't lose a year), your RNOR eligibility start date, and any employer transfer timelines — most families targeting a clean transition move between March and June, aligned with the April-based Indian financial year.
Top regrets returnees cite: underestimating how long re-adjustment takes (6-12 months), not planning RNOR tax status in advance, and assuming schools/lifestyle would be 'just like abroad.' Desi Return's planner and financial checklist are built specifically to close these gaps before the move.
Yes, a phased approach reduces overwhelm and costly mistakes: first confirm your genuine 'why' and get full family alignment, then lock financial/tax planning (RNOR, accounts, DTAA), and only then execute logistics like shipping and school admissions in the final 3-6 months.
The most useful checklists structure the 12+ months before the move around big, hard-to-reverse decisions: determining your RNOR eligibility window, understanding cross-border taxation, researching school curricula (IB/IGCSE/CBSE), and starting city/neighborhood research — leaving smaller logistics (shipping quotes, account conversions) for the 3-6 month window.
The first 30-90 days should focus on formal re-entry admin: applying for/updating Aadhaar and PAN card addresses, converting NRO accounts to resident savings accounts, and activating Indian health insurance — these are time-sensitive and easy to deprioritize amid the emotional adjustment of settling in.
A structured series should sequence decisions logically: deciding if/why to move, choosing a city, financial and RNOR planning, job search timing, school admissions, and final logistics like shipping — tackling one topic per week avoids the overwhelm most first-time planners report.
Yes. India-side setup overlaps, but departure-side rules differ: USA has IRS/state/401(k), Canada has CRA/RRSP/TFSA/CPP/OAS, UK has SRT/pension/ISA, Germany has Abmeldung/GKV/DRV. One generic checklist misses the country-specific traps.
Use the planner if you need a sequenced checklist, tools if you need calculations (RNOR, tax filing, compliance), the blog for deep research, and services if you want direct expert help on tax, shipping, calls, or elder care.
Google gives fragments; WhatsApp gives real stories but also conflicting advice. The planner gives you a sequenced checklist tied to your move date and origin country, with Desi Return resources and services at the step where they actually help.
A planner is personal when you enter your move date, origin country, family status, priorities, and risk areas. A US return adds 401(k), RNOR, and US-phone tasks; families add school and spouse-career tracks. Complex cases still need a human review—use the planner to organize, then book a call for edge cases.
Changing your arrival date shifts school timing, shipping windows, tax and RNOR windows, housing, and job start. Update the date in the planner and re-sort urgent tasks—anything tied to financial year-end or school admission deadlines should move to the top.
Work backward from your target move date. Months 12–6: tax residency and RNOR timing, account strategy, city and school shortlist, and career or business options. Months 6–3: documents, housing bridge, shipping inventory, health insurance, phone SIM, and India bank access. Final 90 days: book shipments, complete school handover, redesignate accounts, and emergency contacts. The 15-week email series walks one topic per week in that order; use the planner when you want the same backbone as a dated checklist.
Check whether your foreign licence or IDP covers the immediate period, then start the Sarathi/RTO process. Do not rely on a car until licence, insurance, and address proof are clear.
Create one folder per person with diagnosis summaries, prescriptions and generic names, vaccine records, allergies, test results, specialist letters, insurance documents, and emergency contacts.
