The founder

Built by someone who lived it — 20 years in the US, moved back to India.

Avinash went through the full weight of it — uprooting kids, unwinding finances, navigating two tax systems, and rebuilding life from scratch. Not just the logistics, but the identity shift, the guilt, the uncertainty.

Since returning, he has spoken with hundreds of families across the US, UK, and Canada. The pattern was always the same: fragmented information, scattered advice, and the emotional complexity of the move almost never acknowledged. Desi Return exists to fix that.

Avinash, founder of Desi Return

I ran across Desi Return at a time when I needed it the most. The content published by DR has been a great help before our move back to India. The community created via whatsapp has been diligently maintained to ensure it composes people who are genuine motive to return to India or those who returned. They offer valuable advice, participate in debates respectfully and exchanging ideas. I hope to see DR continue to keep the quality and value offering high. Best wishes!

Good experience - finally a whatsapp group where people are actually engaged & you get help. Highly recommended - returning is overwhelming but you not alone - if india has anything, it has lots of nris 😜

I think improvement can be made if fewer people are in a group (eg. Have more fin groups). I rather not have to 'check 400msgs in a wk' but some people are very helpful.

Desi Return replied

Thank you Kush! Hard to keep up with the messages in the groups with active engagement

Have watched your Youtube videos and am very happy to see a very diverse group of people who share their experiences. While most of the videos address the moves back to India by younger folks with school aged kids, it was helpful to see some recent videos of seniors discussing senior living communities in India. Keep up the good work!

Common questions

What Desi Return was built to solve.

Yes, but it requires real preparation: giving your spouse enough time to decide (some families take a full year), setting clear boundaries around privacy and space early on, and understanding household rules before moving in. Kids often adapt faster than parents expect, especially when there's extended family support nearby.
Settling depends heavily on preparation: financial runway, school/city fit for kids, and realistic expectations about infrastructure and pace of life. Desi Return's own returnee stories show mixed outcomes — some stay permanently, others return abroad after 3-10 years, or do six months shifts usually due to career, kids' education, rather than the decision itself being wrong.
Contrary to popular belief, India has some things which you can't get anywhere easily, better and affordable healthcare fascilities, for example. But most NRIs choosing India over a third country prioritize proximity to aging parents, cultural belonging, and raising kids near family — not just corpus size. A 6-10 crore corpus is commonly cited as a comfortable retirement/semi-retirement number in Tier-1 Indian cities, but the 'why India' decision is emotional and familial first, financial second.
Spouse and family alignment consistently ranks as the top factor across our returnee interviews — even strong finances and good timing can't offset a move where one partner or the kids were never truly on board. Desi Return's planning process starts with this alignment conversation before financial or logistical planning.
The five most common reasons families struggle are weak motivation for the move, underestimating the practical complexity, expecting a 'perfect' transition, one spouse or child not being fully on board, and moving at the wrong life stage. Addressing all five before departure — not after — is what separates smooth transitions from regretted ones.
Some people do regret it, often because city, spouse career, kids, pollution, bureaucracy, income, or loneliness did not match what they assumed. Many families protect themselves with a written reversal plan: rent before buying, keep foreign bank and phone access, keep a school fallback, and keep 9–12 months of runway so you can reassess without panic.
No—it is not unrealistic, but fulfillment has to come from daily life you can actually live. If fulfillment means being near parents, language, culture, food, entrepreneurship, and less visa anxiety, India can deliver. If it depends on low-friction systems, high privacy, clean air, or foreign-style work culture, be honest about the trade-offs before you move.
Yes, when families practice it deliberately—language, festivals, food, stories, India trips, grandparents, and peer groups. It does not pass on by itself. If culture is your main reason to return, compare real India schooling and social life with a serious plan to keep culture alive abroad before you decide.
Do not decide from one strong feeling. Work through it in order: your values and family reasons, then finances and tax timing, then schools and jobs, then a trial stay, then the execution checklist. A solid decision reduces unknowns—it does not promise zero discomfort.
After 20 years abroad, the real question is whether the India you will live in now fits your health, finances, family, work, and tolerance for daily friction—not whether India is 'good' in the abstract. Think through city, home, healthcare, social circle, documents, and a backup plan before you commit.
Use the planner if you need a sequenced checklist, tools if you need calculations (RNOR, tax filing, compliance), the blog for deep research, and services if you want direct expert help on tax, shipping, calls, or elder care.
Feeling anxious and low before a big move is normal—you are not failing. The feeling often eases when the move stops being one giant identity question and becomes a visible checklist: income, city, family support, taxes, school, housing, health, and first job path. If you are returning because of visa or job pressure, plan your first 180 days as a structured reset, not as proof that you gave up.
Not as a general rule. There is no universal cash incentive for moving back. The PMRC Scheme 2026 offers substantial research funding, but only to selected Indian-origin researchers and professionals in priority sectors.
Indian nationals working abroad, OCI cardholders, and Persons of Indian Origin with strong records in research, innovation, or technology. Applications are at pmrc.education.gov.in.
